Reigning IWGP Heavyweight and Intercontinental Champion Kota Ibushi successfully defended the Intercontinental Championship yesterday at Castle Attack, and today New Japan Pro Wrestling has announced that this Spring they will be unifying the two titles into one.

The new title will be known as the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship.

Kota Ibushi became dual champion on January 4th. He will go down as the 73rd and final Heavyweight Champion and the 27th and final Intercontinental Champion. He will become the first IWGP World Heavyweight Champion.

Ibushi’s first defense will take place on April 4 at Sakura Genesis in Ryogoku Sumo Hall, against the winner of the New Japan Cup.
