Welcome, we hope you enjoy your time on our little slice of the Internet. You may be wondering what Vortainment is and what the site all about. If you are, then you are most definitely in the right place as this page is all ABOUT what Vortainment is about.
From April 2011 until May 2018, we were known as Vortex Effect. Then the domain wasn’t renewed by the domain owner, and we lost the site. Some dweeb bought the domain and has used it to repost our content along with a bunch of spam crap. Whatever.
Now, we’re known as Vortainment. Vortainment itself is a made up word comprised of one part old-name (VORtex Effect) and one part what we talk about (enterTAINMENT). Thusly, Vortainment is “a vortex of entertainment.” Gaming, wrestling, movies, television, books, sports… whatever we want to write about.
We are, first and foremost, a video game blog with a focus on reviews. We’re much more of an opinionated gaming site; an independent alternative to the corporate “mainstream” gaming sites that hype up games with previews and recycle press releases. We’re also non-PC, non-SJW and so there’s your trigger warning if you need one.
If a game gets announced, and we might be interested in it, we’ll post about it. If a trailer for a game we’re interested in gets released, we’ll post it. But we aren’t a traditional gaming news site. When we post news, it’ll also contain our opinion at the bottom (and labeled as such).
But we’re not an extension of publishers peddling garbage to you. We deal very little with publishers and PR in general; our job doesn’t entail rewording or just flat out posting press releases. Besides, why waste our time doing that when big gaming sites do that and get all the visitors? That would be of no value to anyone other than publishers who would be getting free advertisement.
We review games and write opinion pieces. But we also review movies, books, and other products. We cover wrestling with reviews and opinion pieces, and sometimes wrestling news. We’re also moving into other fields of original content, like video content (subscribe to us on YouTube) and live streaming games on Twitch (follow us here). Podcasts are in the works.
Here at Vortainment, we aren’t professional. There’s no fun in that. We’re here on WordPress.com because we care more about our readers, community, and the joy of doing what we do than making money. Sure, we run ads here on the site and post the occasional Amazon affiliate link, but very little comes from any of that. And that’s fine.
We’re opposed to Metacritic, and so our reviews (which use our own five star scale) will never be part of Metacritic. We don’t want to be part of that crowd or contribute to what is ultimately very harmful to the gaming industry (and frankly consumers too who miss out on some really fun games because they’ve been conditioned to believe a 7 is a bad score).
The site itself, as you know it here, was founded in April 2011 when I (Gary) left my main page position as a wrestling columnist for LordsOfPain.net to start my own site. But the community behind Vortainment resides down in our official forums (register and join the discussion!), which date back all the way to August 2004… so yeah, this community is over a decade old now. Perhaps you heard of one of our previous names: Wrestling Matters, United Wrestling Front / The Movie Matinee, HeelZone, or more likely Vortex Effect.
We’re a laid back kind of site. I know, that probably bothers some people who think everything needs to be professionally done or whatever, but that’s just how we roll.
No one here pretends to be an authority on anything; we’re just gamers who like to talk about gaming. We review games honestly based on what we thought of the game while playing it; reviews aren’t to please publishers, they are first and foremost a way to give an opinion on a game and secondly (but just as importantly) to help our readers who have the same taste as us make wise consumer choices.
You’ll find that we have times where there are a bunch of updates a day followed by periods of times where there might be only one or two things posted a week. Again, we do it for the fun and when we have something to say… we don’t pad our content by posting every little thing a publisher emails us because frankly we don’t care and we don’t think our readers care for it either.
We do things our own way, and really that’s how everyone should do things. You’ll either like us or you won’t, either way is fine and we won’t be changing it up regardless. We’re laid back here, maybe too laid back, but we are what we are and we aren’t changing.
If you’ve ever considered writing about video games or wrestling, drop us a line and a writing sample through our contact page. We’re always looking for guys and gals who can offer fresh content (even non-gaming related) to the site. The only thing we require is the ability to write. All positions are unpaid of course (we’re on WordPress.com at the moment after all, so none of us are making anything off of this site), but if you’re dedicated and do well you very well may receive some games/materials to review.
You can check out the full breakdown of our five star review scale, as well as our review guidelines, by clicking here. Also, unlike most gaming sites, we have an Ethics Statement which you can read here.
If you like us, do us a favor and follow us (on WordPress.com) or subscribe to our RSS… nothing makes us happier than seeing that we have a new follower (well maybe if you engage with us respectfully in the comments and the forums, we love that too!).
While you’re at, we’re all over social media so be sure to follow/subscribe/like or whatever else you want to call it on the social media platforms listed below.
