Years ago when I was a teenager at a high school football game, some random girl told me I “looked like that guy from Blow”…. Now aside from sporting the same hair style at the time, it was the most untrue, but also most flattering compliment I have ever received about my own personal appearance.
I just rewatched this movie the other night, and the thought occurred to me while this movie is perfectly in my wheelhouse in terms of style, plot, and soundtrack, is this as good as some say it is? I don’t know.
I know that I like it a lot, but really the story here is a guy who sells drugs for a long time in a boring sort of middle manager kind of way, and as Roger Ebert noted in his review, had he been selling say textiles instead of Cocaine, the story would be fairly similar but a lot less interesting.
That said, I credit the drama that is here to the fantastic job of the actors, namely Johnny Depp of course, but also Penelope Cruz, Ray Liotta etc…
In the end, “Blow” is kind of like the Light Beer version of Scarface, or Scarface without all the crazy “this would only happen in a movie” scenes.
Still, I liked this movie and don’t hesitate to give it a solid rating and recommendation provided you know what you’re getting into.
Blow gets a three out of five: GOOD.
