It’s the last week of October, and the SEC has four teams in the top 10. Saturday night, in Jacksonville, FL, two of those teams will meet in a huge SEC East showdown.
The Florida Gators are riding high. They’re ranked ninth in the country and three weeks ago they upset the now fourth ranked LSU Tigers. The Gators are 6-1 and on a five game winning streak. Their sole loss came in week two against a very good Kentucky team. Since the loss, Florida has vastly improved and looks like a much different team.
The Georgia Bulldogs are coming off a much needed bye week. Two weeks ago, Georgia was ranked number two in the country and then they trounced by LSU in a 36-16 loss that was never really close. Now the Bulldogs sit at number seven following a week that saw several top 10 teams get knocked off.
The Florida/Georgia game is always a huge match-up. These are two bitter rivals, and this year both have dreams of an SEC Championship and a chance at the playoffs. Last year, Georgia ran away with it defeating Florida 42-7.
This is a much better Florida team than the one Georgia destroyed a year ago. No doubt the Florida players that played in last year’s game remembers the beating they received. They’ll be out for revenge this year.
Georgia is a touchdown favorite. For Georgia, if they play like the did two weeks ago against LSU, they’re in trouble. Likewise, if Florida plays like they did three weeks ago against LSU, Georgia is in trouble.
Florida’s offense is finally finding their way after years of mediocrity. Dan Mullen has the Gators moving in the right direction, while the defense is performing at a top tier level. The Bulldogs will have their hands full in the “World’s Largest Cocktail Party.”
With that said, Georgia is still a complete package of a team. While they looked exposed in the loss against LSU, the bye week will likely have them rejuvenated and their eyes back on the prize.
Georgia still controls their own destiny. All they have to do is win. Florida has to continue winning, but they also need Kentucky to lose.
This is a huge match-up with SEC Championship and potentially playoff implications on the line. Which team wants it the most?
