For those familiar with the Devil May Cry series, you will know that Dante is a Demon Hunter. For those not familiar with the series, Dante is a Demon Hunter. He is seeking revenge for the murder of his mother. At least he is in this telling, I have not played the original series, so I’m not sure off hand if that was the plot for those games.nTurns out demons are running some things in Limbo City, brainwashing the public through their Raptor News Network and delicious Mountain De… uhhh… I mean Virility. The city is run by Mundus, the head demon, and he fears Dante, so he wants Dante killed and sends a Hunter after him. The Hunter sucks Dante into Limbo (actual Limbo, not Limbo City– sorry, this might be kind of confusing), which is where Dante meets Kat. With Kat’s help, Dante is able to beat the Hunter and escape back to reality.nOnce back in reality, Kat talks Dante into coming with her to The Order, a group of demon fighters. There we meet Vergil. Turns out, Vergil is Dante’s brother, and their father was a demon and their mother an angel. This all sounds absurd, obviously, but it is presented pretty nicely and backstory is spliced into cut scenes during game play while we learn some new abilities.nObviously the new abilities come in handy as the game moves along and we begin killing more and more demons to get to Mundus, that son of a bitch that killed Dante and Vergil’s mother and imprisoned their father to an eternity of torture. He must pay!nnThere are some nifty things that are incorporated into Dante’s abilities. Depending on which trigger you pull, your sword goes into either Angel or Devil mode. In Angel mode, the sward turns into a scythe called Osiris. In Devil mode, it becomes the Arbiter, a big two handed battle axe type of weapon.nEach mode also has it’s own grappling gun function that will either pull you to the platform or enemy, or pull the platform or enemy to you. Certain enemies can only be attacked by one mode or the other, and the game likes to throw these enemies at you in mixed-and-matched varieties. Definitely makes things interesting.nDmC’s graphics are pretty good. Nothing Earth-shattering, but a little on the cartoonish side. While cartoonish, there are some rather impressive scenic images. Of course, given the subject matter, I was not expecting epic life-like renderings, so what is provided serves its purpose quite well. Still, I would have liked to have seen a little more crispness to some of the enemies.nAlas, we are treated to multi-colored, flying New Year’s Babies shooting at us among other slobbish-looking enemies. Don’t worry, there are some formidable looking enemies… but there’s a big guy that kind of resembles a big green Buddha… and the aforementioned flying New Year’s Babies… and they can be annoying. Very, very annoying.nAs for the audio, it’s pretty standard stuff here. Yet again, nothing Earth-shattering. Most of the dialogue is between Dante and his brother, Vergil, or Dante and this witch chick, who calls herself Kat and who can create portals to Limbo. It does its purpose. The sound effects also do their purpose. Aside from some occasional one liners Dante has, there’s not much that’s very exciting.nnDmC is a fun little romp. While there are specific button sequences to perform specific attacks, I have found that you can also get by with some good old fashioned button mashing. I contend there is nothing wrong with a good button masher every now and then. In addition, the story is fairly solid and interesting once it gets rolling.nNothing really bad about DmC, but there are some things that can only be classified as ‘ehh’. Nothing exceptional in terms of graphics or audio. If I had to pick something as ‘bad,’ it would definitely be the New Year’s Baby as an enemy. Seriously, what the hell were these people thinking?nThis is a pretty solid endeavor, but not anything epic or genre-changing. If you are a fan of this kind of game, or just button mashers in general, you will probably find some enjoyment here. I wish I could tell you whether or not you would enjoy this if you have played the original Devil May Cry games, but since I have not played those, I cannot say one way or the other. Sorry about that.nDmC is a solid, but unspectacular, graphics and audio, but an interesting story with easy, pick-up-and-play, button mashing combat controls. If you are not sure, the demo is definitely worth checking out when you get a chance.
