When E3 rolls around again in June, it’ll do so without a presentation by Sony for the first time in 24 years. That’s right, PlayStation will NOT be attending E3 in 2019 as reported by Game Informer. This continues the slide of importance of E3.
In a statement given to Game Informer, Sony Interactive Entertainment said:
“As the industry evolves, Sony Interactive Entertainment continues to look for inventive opportunities to engage the community. PlayStation fans mean the world to us and we always want to innovate, think differently and experiment with new ways to delight gamers. As a result, we have decided not to participate in E3 in 2019. We are exploring new and familiar ways to engage our community in 2019 and can’t wait to share our plans with you.”
PlayStation senior vice president of communications Jennifer Clark later clarified that PlayStation would not hold a press conference at or around E3.
Patriot’s Point: As a PlayStation gamer, I’m perfectly fine with this. E3 has been sliding downhill for me these past couple of years anyway. Sony’s presentation at this year’s E3 was also rather poor. There are better avenues to reach your audience without sharing the spotlight with others, or even without doing it all at once. I wouldn’t mind seeing Sony take the Nintendo Direct approach. Even with this news of skipping E3, I still say it’s pretty likely that we’ll see a PS5 reveal sometime between February and May.
